Box Score Basics

Learning the Language of a Stat Line

First, learn the box score basics and how to read traditional numbers like AVG, HR, and ERA with context, not just as isolated results. Then, use these familiar stats as starting points to understand what they capture well and where they fall short.  Especially once factors like competition, ballparks, and opportunity come into play.

From there, the focus shifts to the tools that explain why those results happen.  Plate discipline metrics show how hitters control the strike zone and make decisions before contact.  Batted ball data reveals quality of contact, consistency, and how much of a player’s production is driven by skill versus variance.  On the pitching side, pitch traits highlight movement, velocity, location, and usage.  These offer insight that win totals and ERAs cannot provide on their own.

You will also be introduced to process based indicators that teams rely on to evaluate players beyond the box score.  These metrics help separate sustainable performance from short term outcomes.  This makes it easier to spot growth, decline, and hidden value.  By the end, stat lines stop feeling like clutter and start reading like explanations.  It will give you a clearer and more confident way to understand what is happening on the field.
